1. Do I really need a personal website if I’m active on LinkedIn?

While LinkedIn is a great start and a powerful networking platform, a personal website gives you full control over your brand and voice. It lets you showcase your expertise, publish original content, and create a client journey you design, free from third-party platform restrictions.

A personal site establishes you as a serious professional, builds reputation, and distinguishes you from your competition.
It acts as your digital business card, landing page, authority platform, and lead generator - all in one.

It also acts as a trust factor - people can find you online, and not only on socials. It also allows you to be found by AI, as AI not only uses social pages, but also websites to pull information and answer questions of the public.

5. How long does it take to launch a basic but professional website?

Typical timelines can range from 2–6 weeks or longer, depending on content readiness and custom features.

Once the brand board (or home page, whichever you prefer) has been agreed and signed-off and all the needed information has been received by myself, I commit to getting your website done on Showit within a week (5 business days).

6. Can I build my website myself or should I hire a professional designer?

6. Can I build my website myself or should I hire a professional designer?

DIY platforms like Wix, Squarespace or Showit are user-friendly and great for simple, temporary sites.

However, if you want a strategic, standout brand, powerful copywriting, and seamless lead-gen, a professional will save you time and avoid costly mistakes.

Something to remember when considering doing it yourself - cost your time:
  • the time to do research for best practices,
  • time of learning the platform
  • the time to do the actual work.
  • time to test to ensure everything is working.

Squarespace/Wix are easier for non-tech users.

  • testimonials (if available),
  • any client stories or case studies.
  • possible inspiration photo's or websites you like

What is also important to think about, are;
  • Your ideal customer
  • Their specific paint points and how you solve it

I normally provide you with a questionnaire which is specifically designed to help you identify what is needed and what you need to consider when starting your website.

10. Do I need a clear niche or offering before we start, or do you help clarify these?

10. Do I need a clear niche or offering before we start, or do you help clarify these?

It is advisable to have a clear niche and offering, but I have found that as you grow in your business, it can shift. For me it is more important to get "your essence" onto a website and then add your services and offerings around that.

As the end of the day, as a consultant, you not only provide services and solutions, you are also "selling yourself", and potential customers needs to get a sense of you and who you are to decide they want to work with you.

If you’re still refining your niche, I can also assist you in clarifying your ideal client profile, services, and messaging before design begins. And remember, if you niche changes, your website can change with it. Your website will evolve with you as you evolve and change.

Solo professionals benefit from bio/about pages, clear service descriptions, calls to action, testimonials, and lead capture—built for ease of update and personalization.

26. How do I communicate my value and story to my ideal clients?

26. How do I communicate my value and story to my ideal clients?

This can be tricky, but when you ask yourself the right questions, you will be able to communicate your value.
As suggestion is to soundboard your ideas either off of someone else, or use an AI bot to act as a prober. Ask it for help and tell it what your end goal is. It can then generate questions that can lead you to the answer.

If we work together, I normally ask you some probing questions to craft compelling narratives, showcase your results, and structure the content to quickly explain your expertise and how clients benefit.

27. How will my website attract the right clients or opportunities without constant self-promotion?

27. How will my website attract the right clients or opportunities without constant self-promotion?

By clarifying your value, using targeted language, and optimizing content for search and referral, your website works as a 24/7 ambassador, thereby attracting your ideal audience.

It is important to remember, that just having your website "out there" is not enough. Work is needed to generate traffic to it, either in the form of campaigns, SEO, EEAT, social media posting, paid ads, or others.

I normally explain it like building a house and expecting people to turn up. Without clear directions, they will not know how to get to you. This is the same for your website - you need to work on the directions; either by phoning, sending a pin or drawing a map. AND you need to remember to invite them to come over.

28. How can I create a lead magnet (e.g., downloadable resource) or email list?

28. How can I create a lead magnet (e.g., downloadable resource) or email list?

The best place to start to create a lead magnet is Canva. Canva is a very user-friendly and easy platform to use and have multiple templates that you can easily use.

All you need to do is select a template you like, update the content and make sure the colours, font and layout is in line with your current style.

If you need assistance with this, I am more than happy to help at a fee.

To easiest way to set-up your business for local searches is to set it up in Google Maps (Google My Business has moved across to Google Maps). You can do a google search and it will give you step-by-step instructions on how to set it up.

To get listed on relevant directories is normally quite easy as you need to create a profile and then populate sections with your information. It is normally very quick to do.

Section 5: Security, Ownership & Support

30. How do I keep my website secure and up-to-date after launch?

30. How do I keep my website secure and up-to-date after launch?

If your website is built on Wordpress, you will need to ensure that it is regularly updated and backed-up,  as well as the plugins are updated. You will also need to install spam filters, ensure your SSL certificate is updated and paid yearly, as well as a host of other items.

If you make use of a platform like Showit, or Shopify, these security features are normally built into the platform itself.

They also have support teams that can assist you with any queries.

It is therefore important to make the right decision when you decide on a platform to use.

And because of Showit's robust security and comprehensive support, I prefer to use Showit. With them, one does not need to worry about being spammed or attacked.

31. Who should own the website and the content on it?visibility?

31. Who should own the website and the content on it?

You should ALWAYS be the owner of your domain, content, and website.

My suggestion is that you ensure that the domain is registered in YOUR name, as well as the hosting of the website as this indicates ownership.

My suggestion is that if a web designer indicates that they will own any of the content, your domain name or website, you should look for another designer or developer.

For this reason I also prefer Showit. With Showit, you site can be designed and once ready, the key code is transferred to you. This means you are then the rightful owner. But note that if you purchase a template, you only purchase the use of the template and other people can also make use of the same template.

32. What legal pages do I need (Privacy Policy, Terms)?

32. What legal pages do I need (Privacy Policy, Terms)?

33. What happens if I want to update or expand my website later?

33. What happens if I want to update or expand my website later?

If your website is designed in Showit or Squarespace, etc, most edits can be done easily.

My preference is Showit, as it is very intuitive and allows you to click, drag and drop. Its editing functions is very similar to the editing functions of MS Word, which makes it very easy for a non-technical person to do edits themself.

If you want advanced features or redesigns, I offer support or you’re free to work with your choice of provider.

Section 5: Process, Collaboration & Client Experience

34. What’s the typical process/timeline for setting up a website?

34. What’s the typical process/timeline for setting up a website?

Typically you will start the process off with a first meeting with your web designer to determine your goals for your website.

From there you should have a strategy session, followed by content and design stages, review/feedback, then launch.

Most websites take 2–6 weeks, but expedited packages are available.

My specific process is a bit different as we have a first meeting to determine if we are a good fit.

From this meeting (after we have decided that we want to work together), I normally create a brand/mood board of what I believe will fit you and your customer. In our first and second meeting we normally have some general discussions to allow me to get to know you, which allows me to create your brand/mood board.

Once you agree to the mood board (sometimes you already have a brand, then this is replaced with your Home Page design), I start creating your website and complete it within a week.

Once your edits/changes have been made, the keycode is transferred to you and your site goes live within 24 - 48 hours (normally less).

I also help you with this and ensure all links are working and pages are loading correctly.

If all your information is ready with our first or second meeting, the total process can be completed within less than 2 weeks.

35. What if I’m still in a corporate role and need confidentiality in developing my website?

35. What if I’m still in a corporate role and need confidentiality in developing my website?

36. How do we collaborate if I’m in a different city or time zone than my web desifgner?

36. How do we collaborate if I’m in a different city or time zone?

This is the great benefit of our era - all stages can be handled remotely through email, video calls, and shared documents.

37. Can my web designer work with my copywriter, photographer, or brand strategist if I have one?

43. How do you ensure content remains compliant with my industry’s ethics or rules?

It is advisable to take the time to understand relevant regulations; such as confidentiality for advisors or compliance for financial/legal fields, and reflect these standards in your site’s content and features.

If you are in an industry that has strict regulations, it is advised to obtain correct legal guidance from qualified people. This can either be done by directly contacting people specialising in this (i.e. lawyers specialising in the financial services industry), or joining professional bodies governing or advising these industries. They will be able to guide you as to what to include or exclude, without opening yourself to risk.

44. What are best practices for displaying testimonials or case studies within regulatory boundaries?

45. What if I want to protect sensitive or proprietary information on my site?

45. What if I want to protect sensitive or proprietary information on my site?

It is always good to protect sensitive or proprietary information. The best way is to not publish any confidential data. Data can also be redacted and only snippets of information can be shared.

Just keep in mind, that if your LinkedIn profile has all your employment history and / or project history listed, people can link information to companies/people and infer links from that.

Sensitive and confidential information should not be shared publicly. If you want to add information to be accessible to certain people, you can create password-protected or “by request only” case studies when needed. If this is done, clear disclaimers have to be added and restrictions on the sharing of passwords have to be included on the Terms and Conditions page, as well as on the specific page the person accesses.

Please also ensure you have the consent of the person/business whose information you are sharing, before adding it to your site.

Section 8: Technical Support, Maintenance & Ownership

46. How will my website be maintained and updated after launch?

46. How will my website be maintained and updated after launch?

Depending on the platform you have chosen, you can easily make changes yourself using an intuitive editor, especially when using Showit.

Other platforms also normally have intuitive editors, but some can be more user-friendly than others.

It is advisable to discuss your needs with your designer/developer before you commit to a platform, and ensure your designer/developer does offer support after your site has gone life.

When you plan to take over full control of your website after launch, ensure that you either have the technical knowledge if it was designed on Wordpress, or ensure it is an easy to learn and usable platform if it is another platform.

Also ensure you have super admin access to your website as this will allow you to transfer admin rights to another service provider, should you want to change between providers.

Before I start working on your site, I ensure everything is registered in your name and you have master access.

49. What happens if I want to switch providers or take my website elsewhere?

49. What happens if I want to switch providers or take my website elsewhere?

Depending on the hosting provider you choose, your site is mostly portable and you always retain full access.

Just keep in mind that if your website was designed within a platform, like Showit, Hostinger, etc., you might be restricted in transferring your site across to other platforms. You might be able to transfer/download the content, but not necessarily the design,

Ensure your designers focuses on clean, timeless designs that enhance trust.

62. Can my website integrate with my speaking, media, coaching, or workshop activities?

62. Can my website integrate with my speaking, media, coaching, or workshop activities?

Yes - bios, booking info, downloadable resources, event calendars, and media kits can all be featured seamlessly.

63. How will my website adapt as my reputation and opportunities grow?

63. How will my website adapt as my reputation and opportunities grow?

Ensure your designer builds with flexibility in mind. If this is done, one can then easily add testimonials, update services, start a blog or podcast, and evolve your brand as you achieve more.

64. Will this just be another thing I have to redo in 18 months?

64. Will this just be another thing I have to redo in 18 months?

Not if it is done right.

When a website is built around your core values, message, and positioning, not trends or temporary offers, it has staying power.

Ask you designer/developer of previous work done and check whether the website was redone within the last year or so. If it was not, you know they know their stuff.

As a matter of interest; clients I worked with 2–3 years ago are still using the same structure and story today. The details may evolve, but the foundation holds. We design for who you're becoming, not just where you are now. That’s what makes it last.
